    Ireland: Saved by Emperor Domitian.

I realize that the title of this thread is absurd and it would require some fancy footwork through time and space for Saint Patrick and Emperor Domitian to encounter one another. I'm not a historian :bookworm: and I realize that some of you are so feel free to comment on this.

Really, you won't hurt my feelings! :depressed:

In 82AD Rome’s military governor in Britain was Gnaeus Julius Agricola. He was a brilliant military strategist who had helped defeat the armies of Queen Boudica in 61 AD and then went on to pacify and bring Roman culture to the region.

According to the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus, Agricola had an interest in conquering the land which is now
Ireland and he was supported by an ex-king who had ruled there. Agricola, upon discussing the idea with the deposed king, decided that he could conquer the Emerald Isle
with one Roman legion. Anyway, General Agricola never got to test his theory because he was recalled by Domitian to deal with more pressing issues plaguing the Roman armies in Britain.

So, unbeknownst to Emperor Domitian, he saved
    Hibernia from Roman conquest.

Here's my incarcerated Domitian with a shamrock. I considered freeing him from his confinement this morning and documenting the event for this post but I chickened out at the last minute. :pigeon:

    Maybe next time.

    Blessings,

I don't have an Irish reference Domitian but I do have a green sestertius.
