You may ask who is John W. Brown? Well in reality he's a she.....yes it's true. She is one of two remaining Liberty ships left out of a fleet of 2710 built during the second world war. She is the last remaining ship of 383 of her sister ships built at the Bethlehem - Fairfield ship yard Baltimore Maryland . That was the largest single Liberty ship yard in this nation. Thirty eight of her sisters were sunk or damaged by enemy action. Today there are only two Liberty ships left thanks to Project Liberty Ship one the John W.Brown at her dock in Baltimore another on the West coast. All others who them and their crews served this nation at a time of war are gone. Congratulations to the Brown the men and women who have served on her. As well as the people who through their hard work restored her so all may know her history, and her part in history to defend this nations freedom . For more information Please visit the Web site of Project Liberty Ship inc. www.ssjohnwbrown.org here you can find all the information needed including a virtual panoramic tour of the ship. And will add that this poster as well as the John W.Brown were both born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
What is cool about your post is I saw that ship in Baltimore last year and wondered what it was. I had a great time in Balto - sure would love to see the Camden yards and a game next time I'm there.
Not sure if you are aware....but this ship does a few trips down the bay each year. It is done in the time period of the 40's with the crew and everything in character . I've even seen the WW II war birds give it an escort. If by chance you are heading down I-95 Just before the harbor tunnel look to the right she sits at her berth in her 40 vintage splendor .
Yeah, I looked up the website - amazing that the ship has been kept in operating condition. Sure would be nice if the USS Constellation wasn't an emasculated abomination - no masts etc.
Wow, Liberty ships. I'm old enough to have sailed on a couple. We (mother, sister and I) went to Germany in 1947 on one. Don't know which one. Came back from Germany in late 1948 on one. And I know the name of that one; the Daniel I. Sultan. http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/22/22120.htm And even stranger yet I sailed from Oakland, CA, to Yokohama, Japan, in June of 1965 on the same ship.
You know I truly didn't notice while up in the inner harbour during the Baltimore show. I will check and report. In fact having lunch right now looking out at the harbor near the ship yard on Boston st.
