After ho-humming on acquiring some British pennies over the years, finally got my feet wet with two. Nothing rare or high grade, but they were in my budget. Henry III (1216-1272 A.D) AR Penny Long Cross type Class 3b Engraver: Nicholas of St. Albans O: hЄNRICVS RЄX | III, Crowned facing portrait of King Henry III, 6 pointed star straddles central crown ornament, legend from 12 o'clock. R: "/CIVI/TAS/CAN/TOR long cross pattée, with trefoil in each quarter. Canterbury mint 1.3g 19mm Spink 1410 North 1040
Very nice! Are you sure that Edward I isn't Canterbury? I can't see 'London' but that may be the double strike...
Congrats on the acquisitions @Mat I'm fairly confident, though this may be lots of shandy talking, that the reverse of your Edward I AR Penny reads /CIVI/TAS/CAN/TOR starting at the "left" quadrant. Either way, great coins.
You're welcome @Mat Recently I've had the urge to expand my Henry III collection from the one coin it was at for the longest time. I picked up a new one not too long ago. Henry III 1216-1272 AR Penny Voided Long Cross Coinage York mint Class 3b 1248-1250 AD Obv: crowned facing bust of Henry, i.m. star, HENRICVS REX III Rev: voided long cross with trefoil of pellets in each angle, IEREMIE ON EVER N.987; S.1363
The thread title was misleading, I was thinking it was about good food to chow after "LAST CALL" Seriously though, nice mid-evil coins. I find the designs to be very interesting.
Sorry - I'm gonna be the jerk that doesn't let this slide. There's nothing "evil" about the Middle Ages. The term is 'medieval' which is derived from the Latin medium aevium which is translated as 'Middle Age.' So, 'middle ages' or 'Medieval' are correct, but never 'mid-evil.' Okay, end rant (and nothing personal @Johndoe2000$! This and using the term 'dark ages' just rankle me...). Here's my examples of the OP Coins: England Henry III, r. 1216-1272 (1248-50) London Mint, AR Long Cross Penny, 18.28mm x 1.5 grams Obv.: ★hENRICVS REX.III'. Well, not my intention to "RANKLE" anyone and do apologize for it. I was simply describing the period the coin was made/used. I'm sure most understood my description, which may have been spelled wrong. BTW, I don't like the term "RANKLE".
