Picked this up yesterday. Opinions on grade? 3 over inverted 3? Or just gunk in the digit? Thanks for looking!
I'd say VF+. Been a while since I last ID'ed varieties on these coins but a quick look at my reference says "Yes", 3 over inverted 3.
I say a vf 25 with all that gunk in the date it's hard to make a call on the variety . It does look as it is the 3 over inverted 3. Maybe a rose thorn to pick out some of that crud. But look below the 3 in the denticals . A MPD perhaps a 3?
I used a different diagnostic to ID the coin. In particular that variety is the only one in 1834 to have the first "U" in UNUM centered under the "OF" on the reverse.
After enlarging your image yes I believe it is an 3/3 nice cherry pick. You can see it in the lower loop of the 3 . Yes Kanga is correct with the pup of the U.
Thanks for the help guys! I really like bust coinage lately and I couldn't leave this one in the shop. Should I try to pick the crud off of that 3 or just leave it be?
I'd probably leave it be now that you know what it is , but a fresh rose thorn couldn't hurt just around the date .
