Great OP coin Eric! That reverse is awesome. Bellerophon riding Pegasus slaying chimaera. Corinthia, Corinth. Marcus Aurelius Æ 26mm. Bellerophon. Obv: Laureate head right. Rev: CLI COR Bellerophon riding Pegasos flying right, attacking a chimaera, facing right. BCD 706; SNG Copenhagen -.
Expanding on various (but especially @Alegandron's) "eclectic variety of horses" strategy... India, Paramaras of Malwa, billon dramma, 4.45 g, 15mm. c. 1200 AD Obv: Gadhaiya style bust; Rev: War scene with horseman killing warrior lying on the ground. Ghorid: Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad (1171-1206), AE jital, Rajput bull & horseman type with Nagari inscriptions, A1781: And my rarest one, a Saka/Scythian issue derived from a Seleukid horse type, but depicting the "king of the Sakas". The consensus on zeno.ru (category 2733) is that it comes from Samarkand (Sogdiana). Possibly as early as 1st c. BC (Mitchiner: the Dahae) prior to the Saka migration into India, or, if 1st-2nd c. AD possibly non-Kushan Yuezhi prior to their own southern migration. (Any further info appreciated... @medoraman? I saw you're interested in Silk Road stuff...)
Awesome!! Oki, congrats on adding that sweet OP Hadrian Dupondius (it's gorgeous) Ummm, I happen to have a fairly cool example as well ... Hadrian Dupondius ... my humble example is flying the opposite direction compared to your cool new pony
Always pleased to see that one @stevex6 (I encourage you as I know you're a bit shy and reluctant at showing off your treasures...) Q
Yes, the last you pictured is from Samarkand from all I have read. Yours is a fairly early style, they devolved over time. I have silver ones as well as later billon/copper ones. Near the end the obverse was just a raised lump and the reverse was a more stylized horse head. The reverse kind of became like a punch, making a very scyphate coin.
