I’m mostly into world coins, especially French and British, these days although there are a few U.S. coins still on my list. For those who collect world coins, October is a big month because of a lot auctions in Europe (MDC, Gadoury, Gorny & Mosch, Leu, CGB, others) and Asia (Auction World in Japan, Stack’s Bowers in Hong Kong, others). I bid on 5 coins and won 3, which is better than I usually do. The 2 I lost went for record prices. One that I won is pictured below.

It’s an art deco design by Lucien Bazor, chief engraver of the Paris mint. It’s a 100 francs gold coin, NGC MS64, dated 1936. The type was minted 1929, 1932, 1933, 1935 and 1936. The first three dates are patterns with only 1935 and 1936 being minted for circulation. The gold patterns are all extremely rare and expensive. There is a 1929 cupro-aluminum pattern which was minted in large numbers and is relatively cheap. Although mintage data indicate that slightly more of the 1936 coins were minted than 1935, the 35’s appear to have survived in greater numbers and are slightly less expensive than the 36’s. Then there is the 1934 coin, which is listed only in Krause and nowhere else except some authoritative references refer to it as unknown. I’ve been unable to find it in auction catalogs and think it’s a “vapor coin”.

Cal
