WOW! Where they striking the coins with feathers at the mint that day? Weak strike indeed. Off to go check #25, hopefully I did better over there.
Horse puckey ! That coin being in that condition is no more due to a weak strike than I am Santa Claus ! You don't get a worn flat rim from a weak strike. It's just another case of a TPG using an excuse to grade a coin higher than it deserves.
I know what you are saying Doug but I don't think we are seeing the rim because the slab is hiding it. This is one of many reasons I hate trying to image coins in NGC slabs. At the same time I feel the coin got a bump in grade just because of what it is.
FWIW, they are also the second company to look at this coin. The other (the old ANACS at a show) called it VG10.
same grade,, pcgs. I've seen many in this condition... very weak strikes were common,, the low grade variability doesn't bother me as much as the MS variability in relation to strike and it's supposed influence on the grade. In this case, I do think the lack of detail on these coins was due to strike. That said, I do think poor strike should affect the grade... and would say these are AG-G... you should see some of the MS examples out there with G to VG detail,,
