I have had many coins come back as QC over the years. I don't let it bother me anymore. Pretty coins will always sell. Many collectors will not care and form their own opinion. The TPGs are careful with color they don't see very often. I don't blame them. Anything different should be called questionable.
I think who ever treated the coin did well on the reverse, but messed up on the obverse, time or concentration. Very pretty, but I wonder if it is now stable. IMO, Jim
It can be a bit frustrating getting the QC when sending a coin in yourself but when buying it already in the holder, it can be a good opportunity to get a lower price on a nice coin.
I would have guessed AT, it's too over the top to be natural. I picked up the brother and sister to this coin, check the numbers. They called it "Edge Corrosion" take a look:
I was bidding on those too. Nice looking details coins. And I feel like "edge corrosion" is better than "questionable color".
Nice pickups! I saw there were a handful all from the same submission. A few had some strong bidding so I did not chase them. Whoever sent all of these in must have been disappointed but at least the final prices were above what you would typically see from details slabbed coins.
I'm not so sure about the edge corrosion vs questionable color. The color looked market acceptable to me on many of these, so I could see them grading if someone tried again. Meanwhile, corrosion (if it is actually there) should cause a details grade each time. Maybe it can be conserved, but that is an extra step plus risk to the coin.
I thought I would crack one out and have a close look at the edge. Maybe it can be conserved if it is not real bad. Can't see anything while it is in the holder. I just like how they look - AT or not.
As far as the grade on yours (and mine), it will take some careful study. Grading highly toned coins is difficult.
You might as well since the holder does not help the coin much and by cracking you will be able to see if it is serious or not.
Update: I cracked out the 1944 S & the 1945 S to have a look at the "edge corrosion". Result: It was not there. No edge corrosion to be found. Gave the edges a quick wipe with Verdicare, and sent them to be graded. The 1944S came back MS66 (sorry no FS), and the 1945S came back MS67 (no FS though).
Congrats on the results! I saw one of the others from this original group get sent in again and it came back questionable color. Maybe some will take more efforts (if someone is willing to put in that much in grading fees).
