This peace dollar was graded by PCGS in the 90's and then cracked and resubmitted to PCGS recently. What say ye?
oooooooh I love these posts! Going off the PCGS Photograde website, I'd put it between AU53-AU55, leaning a little more into AU55, it's real close.
I'll be the contrarian and say it was an MS 65 and got a conservative grader recently who gave it an MS 64.
It looks about as nice as mine, so I would be surprised if it got less than MS65 nowadays. In fact, I'll be optimistic and say it was MS65 then and MS66 now? Speaking of mine- I just bought it at the FUN show a few days ago. So here it is, by way of comparison. It is a PCGS MS65 in a 1990s-vintage old green label holder. I have no intention of cracking it out, but this thread does make me curious about what would happen if I did, hypothetically. It's a real lusterbomb, so it called out to me from the case and said "buy me!"
This peace dollar belonged to my dad who was born in 1922! It was in a PCGS MS63 holder. I joined PCGS after a long break intending to get a second opinion on some tokens and medals but found they could not be submitted with my free vouchers. So, I rummaged around for some raw coins and thought it might be interesting to resubmit the slabbed dollar. My results:
Well, bummer! Aside from perhaps one little mark on the throat, that thing looks just about as mark-free as my MS65. Might be worth another try at NGC? Of course, there is the possibility it "had some work done". They must have seen something. But what? One thing that I did question is the definition of the line running along the base of the right edge of Liberty's neck. Could that be some tooling there? If not that, then I dunno? *shrug* It's a nice looking coin, regardless.
That stinks and the MS 63 original grade seemed fairly conservative. With altered surfaces, the only thing I notice is that the cheek and neck have an “odd” look (like someone rubbed or thumbed that area-but it could just be the photo).
