Richie, Please tell us why you think this coin is an MS64*. As you can see from the rest of the posts, most people think it is MS66 clean but resides in an MS65 holder.
Wow, this post is exciting.. I just found one of these last night going thru some old flips. The one I have has about the same wear but doesn't have the obverse color that yours does. Mine does have more hairline scratches tho.. I'll post some pictures up in the grade-me forum tonight. -DJ
Morgan Grade I'd have to say MS64, but due to the "rubs" I'd be surprised if it is anything over a '63. BTW: For those of you that ain't initiated, the "flatening" of the hair over the ear is NOT wear - just a filled die.
A filled die ? On an '85-O ? I'd say it was a weak strike like most of the rest from the O mint in that time frame.
I think there is too many hits on the reverse to warrant a higher grade IMHO. I would grade the obverse at MS65...with it's hits it would warrant a higher grade but the New Orleans strike limits it to MS65 for me. But, with the marks on the reverse, bump it down to MS64. However, with the wonderful obverse and the toning...I think it earns a "*" on top of the grade as it is an exceptional MS64. I could be way off, but that's what I think.
Lehigh96, This one's a crapshoot because I'm not familiar with the nuances of this series. So, this is an "everything else being equal" technical grade. It's so clean, it's a 65, minimum. Today, the brokers bump it up to 66, minimum.
Very beautiful coin!!! :thumb: Now that's a nice one! I'll say MS-65, maybe a MS-66. I'll say they gave it a 66 though. Possibly a *? Still, sweeeet coin! :thumb: Phoenix
No RichieB16, you are not way off, you are right on target. I will comment further about the grading of this coin in the Market Grading vs Technical Grading round 36 thread. Here is a photo of the slab.
Cool, I got one right! I made that first post and was going to comment in more detail but I couldn't stay at my computer so I just posted my grade. When I looked at it later and saw your response...I was a little worried that because of the lack of elaboration, I had insulted you (and your coin).
I didn't mean to do that at all. My intention was to shed some light on Market Grading. I just wanted to make sure that you had a reason for your response and that it wasn't a guess. You did have a reason and a darn good one, congratulations and thanks!
