You sure seem like you think that you are an authority on grading .
With that said you have proven to me that you should be considered an authority , the problem is you are so caught up with the ANA standards you won’t accept TPG standards. I never did disagree with you that the TPG’s make mistakes , sometimes major ones. I have purchased a few of their mistakes over the years.

For fun I am going to post another coin for a grade guess.

Both of these coins were in other TPG holders and submitted to PCGS for a cross.
Both were over graded so I listed a minimum grade that was acceptable to me for the cross. The FH dollar has not been looked at by CAC , the Bust Half is CAC certified.
Footnote on the FH dollar – this particular die state is high relief making the coin a bit more difficult to grade.

The strainer is still intact . I never doubted his ability to grade , I argued that he should not dispute a grade from PCGS and CAC based on a picture. I also argued that his grading based on ANA standards was to conservative.
Go back and read my posts.
Actually you were the one how though the coin was thumbed which was ridiculous.

Actually you are the one who needs to explain why , you tell me why you think it was thumbed ?

    The way it looks.

Your turn. You tell me why it's ridiculous.

Well anyone can disagree with TPG standards. :) While not second guessing them - I do disagree with some of their grades(we are just talking opinions). Especially when it comes to key dates. The 1795 I am not sure I can grade, the 1818/7 might have some weak strike, but certainly looks AU to me. Would I pay MS money - nope, could it really be MS - yep, by TPG standards. Then again I am not an expert, but don't mind giving an opinion here and there. :)

So that is your reason ?? Because it looks like it was ?
I don’t have to defend why I don’t think it thumbed and that your comment was ridiculous CAC already did that for me .
How about you do something productive and see how you grade those other two coins I listed.

How did CAC do that? By putting a green bean on it?

Are you so naive that you don't think a TPG or CAC can make a mistake?
You've got a LOT to learn.

All I did was give an opinion and you come at me like I killed your best friend and you won't say why.

I know why; it's because I dare to offer an opinion that differs from what's printed on the slab.

Hmmmm... seems to me there are others that have done the same, yet I'm the only one you have attacked. Thanks for the welcome.

I set the trap and you took the bait. You are very argumentative, I already knew that .
I am not naïve, rather far from it. You calling me naive makes you sound somewhat ignorant. But I don’t think you are ignorant rather you get a bit hostile when someone does not agree with you . You proved that with your comments to Leadfoot as well. This all has to do with seeing the coin in hand and viewing a picture. One thing CAC is really good at is finding subtle problems with a coin . If this coin was thumbed CAC would have picked up on it . That was my point which was far from Naïve.
I am not attacking you , I asked a simple question which you gave a very vague answer. If you would have said something to the effect of : in the right obverse field I see what appears to be evidence of a thumbing or something to that effect I would have responded differently.

se-collectibles, welcome to the forums!! :D On never mind you have over 400 posts already!! sheez you've been busy.

And I agree with Mark H "Would I pay MS money - nope, could it really be MS - yep, by TPG standards."

I dont think that coin is MS as I don't like what appears to be rub but that's my opinion just like it's the TPGers and CAC's that it is. Mine is from a picture and I don't get paid for it so you should probably go with theirs then :D
But I still would not pay MS money for that coin unless it looked differently in hand.
But I would love to have that coin for free...wanna send it? ;)

You two really like to argue with each other don't ya! Let me shed some light the situation.

Mark, did you notice that nobody jumped on SE after his thumbing comment. At first glance of the PCGS photo, the dark area on the cheek bears resemblence to how a thumbed coin would look after time. The practice of thumbing is usually done to mint state coins in order to hide surface flaws and increase the grade. Since this coin is considered mint state by the TPG's, thumbing is not entirely out of the question.

However, I can't imagine how thumbing a coin with so much "cabinet friction" would help increase the grade of the coin. In the end, this coin is not what I would consider a good candidate for a thumbing coin doctor. For that reason, I find it highly unlikely that the coin is thumbed.

Personally, I don't really think SE believed the coin was thumbed but I do believe he was trying to get you goat!

Ah, because I did not answer the way you wanted you call me ignorant.

You ARE naive because you don't think CAC can make a mistake.

You DID attack me when you called my statement ridiculous.

YOU are hostile because you, as you put it, set the trap.

As far as me being hostile, I give what I get.

    Leigh,
I think SE was trying to bait me as well.
I don’t want this to turn ugly so lets see some grade guesses on the other two coins I posted. These were both downgrades when they went in to the PCGS holder.
I want to see what GDP and SE grade these coins and then I will post the grades from the old holders and the grades from the PCGS holder. This thread morphed into a TPG over grading thread so I thought it would be interesting for me to post a couple of coins that I thought were overgraded . That was the main reason I submitted them to PCGS for a re grade.

Actually, no. To me, it looked like it had been thumbed. After the comments since, I understand that it probably hasn't been.

But that doesn't mean that it hasn't.

SE drop it already – because this can turn really ugly and nasty. I have better things to do then convince you that I am far from being Naïve. Calling your statement ridiculous was not a personal attack , calling me naïve was. If we met in person, after 5 minutes of talking with me face to face you would feel like a fool for making that comment.

Now shut up and grade those other coins – pretty please – with sugar on top . "-)
