Isn't the cliché . . . "an AU coin is only one scratch mark away from being a MS coin?" So . . . like a lot of folks above, I am going give benefit to the clue you gave about being surprised and will guess your coin was graded as "MS60 - scratches."

I have so many ungraded gold coins and am wondering what to do with them. I went to my local coin dealer and he helped me to separate the coins I should send in for grading versus the ones I should sell. ANY ADVISE? Where is the best place to sell ungraded coins? The local dealer is only offering melt down value. Even though he stated many of the coins were, in his opinion, upper AU and MS examples he explained he could only offer me melt down pricing. WHAT WOULD YOU DO? :) P.S. Sorry Sundance for your Ebay situation. I can 100% relate to your story!!!!

It is clear that once you get into AU territory and especially in the MS region, that grading gets to be tough (much tougher than I thought!). But AU55 is a long ways from MS65. I know that I've looked at some MS69 coins and couldn't find even the slightest hint of any marks or blemishes and yet have seen some MS70s that did have a slight marks here or their. Go figure.

If a lot of people had come back with a guess in the 60's I would probably break it out and resubmit. But with so many people saying its an AU55, I won't waste the money. It will stay in the AU55 slab and I'll mount it on the wall as a constant reminder of this learning experience. But even at AU55 it is a nice, well struck, Walker.

There is way too much rub on both sidesof this coin. I think Anacs hit the nail on the head.
