The spot above the C in Monticello looks to be the down fall for full steps along with it appears to be a rub on the steps also
Just wanted to add.. i do not think it will get the step designation due to the 5th step. I feel it is not complete enough. I assume this is NGC graded because I don't believe PCGS doesn't designate only five steps. edit: I did hit 67 on the poll. Not that it matters since everyone was chosen. Here are the problems with the steps, in my "newbie" opinion.
Yep, same rationale here (I went MS 67 normal on 1st page). I'm sure this is probably wrong though, they may not penalize the coin for those types of marks. I'm sure we'll find out here in the next couple hours for sure though edit: I'm also a newbie, especially with regards to jeffersons
Wow, nothing like being singled out. MS-64, it has obvious flaws that would keep it from going any higher and obviously the TPG's will give it a higher grade for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...
Please accept my apologies. I sincerely thought that you were selecting the grade of MS64 because it was the only grade not taken. I stand corrected, you were not being devious, you just don't know how to grade Jefferson Nickels. :fish:
Okay, Duke is the winner. The coin has an assigned grade of MS66. Personally, I believe the coin to be of MS67 5FS quality and I think it has a great chance at an upgrade either to a MS66+ or MS67 and I am very confident about the 5FS designation. Now, can anyone tell me why the coin did not get a full step designation when it was originally graded?
It would only be a guess, but did NGC even have the 5FS designation when this coin was graded. I thought that was a fairly recent. Or not.
I agree with the others. The 5FS didn't come around until February 16th, 2004, and at the latest your coin was graded in 2000 (probably earlier, looks like a NGC 5 or 6?).
Like the picture stated below the lower right bridge looked broken just barley to me. I'd go on the steps but your the expert 6-3-4-5
Correct, Correct, Correct! Prior to 2/16/04, NGC only used the FS designation which required 6 Full Steps. This coin resides in an NGC generation 3 holder which puts the grading date in 1988 or 1989.
Really? Sweet!!! Now you know I've read lot's of your posts and learned plenty from them. Do you agree that it is close to a 67? And do you think it would make FS in today's holders?
