Guess the grade: 1903 Barber Dime

    Hey Peter....why don't you and Bone go work for PCI...it seems like ya'll are better at grading than we are :D ;)

    TCT.....in person the coin might really be AU....what do you think??...all we have are photos and photos can make a coin look total opposite.

    I don't have a whole lot of grading experience with Barber dimes, since I don't collect them as a set, just as a type. That said, in hand I think it is a AU53 (I don't know, maybe it is a 55 and I'm just too critical). It appears to be weakly struck in the front of her hair (right below the LIBERTY band) and on the reverse on the lower right hand side leaf details (this area is opposite the weakly struck area on the obverse).

    Anyway it has great luster behind/through the toning, plus the nick in front of her mouth is a lot less detracting on the coin than in my photo. I think the large size of the image distorts how bad that nick is on such a small coin.

    Anyway, I am happy with what I paid for it, and it is pretty in that hole in my type set.
