I originally posted this coin in the newest aquisitions thread but I think I was a tad hasty with my photogs.......they sucked. Better examples here, I'll hazard, but you guys be the judge. Guess the grade old fellows. Take a stab at it. Be assured there is no skullduggery afoot......choose wisely and have fun.

David, dear David. Never in my wildest dreams could I afford a '65 and I urge you to guess again. :)

It looks like there are cleaning lines, mostly on the reverse and I also see some wear. I guess AU-58 Details.

AU 55 details cleaned...I see what looks like a wipe on the reverse (the lines don't look like regular hits but more indicative of a cleaning)...still I like the coin overall and this is a good one to add to your collection!

I went straight 55, but it may have been cleaned. Hard to distinguish between circulation marks, die polish, and cleaning in those pictures. Would be much easier in hand to rotate the coin and watch the luster.

I voted AU-55. It definitely has some light wear. I see a pattern to some of the marks on the reverse, but I don't think that it's bad enough to give the coin a "details" grade.

I see some minor wear so AU-58. I also think it’s been cleaned but long enough ago that it straight graded. The retuning will help if that’s the case.

I voted AU-55 Details, Cleaned. I think there is definite wear. The hairlines just cross the borderline between deliberate and normal wear. Nice looking coin, though and pleasant toning.

I did note a significant flattening of Lafayette's leg. I attribute some of this to wear but most of it to strike as that degree of flattening is not congruent with the degree of wear on the rest of the coin.

    • You guys are really good......I bought this at auction a few weeks ago. The piece did appeal to me because it looked as every bit better than the '62 example I already have. The price was right, and I believe I got it for a minor steal. Still, the piece has been messed with, but I believe there was a lot of 'messing' going about back in the day. Collectors back then didn't subscribe to our modern day straight laced, no nonsense, no rub a dub concept and credo.
