Guess the grade 1881-O and guess why ddddd is excited

The ANACS slab photo shows the DMPL characteristics more clearly. I do think their grade is very conservative—my opinion is there is no rub. To my Morgan-loving eye, it is clearly an MS coin. However, cracking it out would be risking losing the DMPL designation. I would rather have an AU 58 DMPL, than a MS 63 or 65 PL coin, especially for that particular date. Unless it makes 65, which is a gamble, you would not benefit from the possibility of an upgrade. In MS 65 PL, it takes a big jump to $3400, but that would be rolling the dice. It is a really beautiful coin, as is.

Undergraded & gorgeous! Congratulations - and cool idea on the old holder collection, I like that and am thankful that I don't have the bandwidth to do that at present with everything else I'm trying to do (Colonials & SLQs primarily).

 

Wow I way over shot. The glare in the original pics hid a lot of the scuffs. Even with your last pics, even though a little dark I think I would have went at least MS-62 PL. Probably undergraded.

 

It might upgrade in grade but losing the DMPL is definitely a possibility with the more stringent standards. It would also have to go MS 64 PL to be worth more than it currently is-again a risk I'm not comfortable taking. Plus it might be next to impossible to find another old small Anacs holdered AU 58 DMPL. So no cracking for me on this one.

 

Thanks! I will likely do a thread to detail my progress so far. I am trying to stick to a reasonable budget but it still adds up. It's also funny (sad?) that it can cost more to pick up an XF/AU than an MS. Low to mid grade MS examples are still plentiful in these older holders but when you get to the lower grades, it is more challenging. At times I'll pull the trigger if I see a hard to find grade even if it costs MS 63+ money (I do have my limits though and won't venture into MS 65 money on those grades).
