Guess the grade - 1844-D $5 Gold Eagle

    I just noticed you tagged me BigTee . . . The coin appears deficient of luster for the amount of detail retained . . . I would have called it AU Details, but think NGC liked the coin well enough to value grade it as an XF45 instead of bagging it.

    Either way, I think it comes out worth approximately the same in the minds of most educated buyers.

    I would guess XF-45 obverse w/AU-50 reverse - details graded. It looks to have been dipped of its original skin & surfaces tho. A fate far too many Southern gold pieces have suffered.
