No - with the big picture I think I see just slight run across some of the high points - specially the wing tip. I think the chatter, if the tpg calls it "cabinet rub" would make it low MS. When I first saw it I waffled between high AU and low MS.
I know matts pics can often make the dings look worse then they do in hand but with that chin and the right field I can't see that 99 over ms 63 even on the best of days my call was 62 I wanna say 61 obverse and 64 reverse The 82 cc in my opinion is a solid 55 if their really feeling generous I could see 58 but I think its got a bit too much rub for that
Thanks Doug , I did see the wingtip wear but missed the rest , I just figured the tpgs will chalk it up to cabinet rub and market grade it up . It is a nice looking large gold coin .
Rusty the grade estimates in all of these kind of threads are always what I would grade the coin - not what I think a TPG would grade the coin. If I ever am estimating what I think a TPG would grade a coin, then I specifically say so. If I don't specifically say so, then I am not.
Yeah, really. I consider myself a fairly strict grader, not Doug strict, but stricter than most here I imagine. I wish they simply grade like grading guides for over a hundred years taught us to grade, then let the market sort it out. I seriously see nothing wrong with a nice x or a coin, but everyone wants a BU grade, so the tpg's invent them. For the record, I am not talking about Mat's coins here. So, I think Doug and my grades are fair how we were taught to grade, but not how tpg's grade today. I guess CT has another grumpy old grader now. I wear the distinction with pride.
I remember when I was a newbie some 50+ years ago . I was afraid to give any coin a BU and these were beautiful coins . AU was todays 63 or 64 , so I was almost as conservative as you and Doug . Though the tpgs have added immensely to our hobby , I just wish they'd get it right . Any wear means AU .
I tend to agree I see an awful lot of ms slabs with coins I'd call au-58. I tend to be conservative too especially when it comes to major marks on a coin IMO a ms 65 or higher should be dang near flawless. Especially on the face fields and major devices. I see a lot of coins in 65 especially Morgans and $20 gold that I feel should be a 63-64 same goes for poorly struck coins. Probably why I like the old holder coins as I feel their often more accurately graded
