While we wait to learn the nitwit grade, here is a raw 1919 India Rupee that I got from Allen Berman at the Boston show. It happened to be one of his new purchases. Now it is one of my new purchases. It is a low end UNC but the toning is attractive to me. It has contact marks in the field & portrait from being banged around with other coins of its weight. (Spock1k's coin is lacking any contact marks).
I am not even going to hazard a guess. I see it's not Lahore mint. How can you tell if it is Bombay or Calcutta ?
I think the coin is attractive I am not very familiar with Indian coins. I believe that my coin was made in Mumbai because it has a dot under the lotus blossom on the reverse at 6:00. I believe that the real experts also look for the engravers initials but I don’t know where to look for it. I was going to ask Allen to teach me about this coin but he was busy with other customers. My Krause catalog shows that in 1919 they made more than 200 million of these coins at both the Mumbai & Calcutta mints. The value is listed at $20 in UNC.
Well anything for harvey the nitiwits in this case graded it a 63 we take GD grading with a salt for indian coins ( if they are not gold, ask him to grade steel coins if you want to have fun) so we wont discuss it especially after he just admitted to starting the toned coin market in 2002 i have to work with him to put the genie back in the bottle so no ruffling feathers for now in my opinion the coin is as solid as it gets for a 63 but if this is a 63 then ngc would have to take out many 65 from their holders and slab it a 63 if not a 62 so there you have it folks thats what a 63 rupee should look like but it wont be easy to find a 64 didnt allen start his own kingdom or something? you should see my signature line your coin is nice and if you paid under $20 for it then you did ok. there are different mint marks for coins engraver initials size of the coin patterns dots writing etc . its quite complicated but george 5 and 6 are pretty easy for the most part bingo
When I saw a '45 Half Rupee like mine listed for 2000 on eBay, I was excited ! Man, I even yelled at my wife and told her to pack a bag ! When I realized the price was in rupees, it really deflated my enthusiasm in a hurry. LOL Well, at least she got a big laugh at my expense. You can't take much of a trip for $40. LOL gary
