Since I know "not-much-at-all" about Morgans help a feller out as to what the giveaway is to determine the year? thanks
So which one do you have? There are 65 die marriages plus die stages for this year and mint. The shown coin has not been attributed on the slab. The point of VAM's is to identify and chart die pairings (marriages) and the life stage of each die, Early, early - mid, mid, mid-late, late and very late.
@Mac McDonald …if you are using a wireless mouse, low batteries can cause wonky stuff, or a stuck clicker on the mouse…try going to a plain vanilla, wired, old school (read that: not expensive) mouse…Spark edit…if this is what you are already using, it may be worn out or dirty inside, try a different one…
There is really no way to be certain from just the reverse. New Orleans minted Morgans from 1879 to 1904. The challenge was to see how good you could guess by the luster, strike and other features. My experience told me there are these that look like this in the early 1880s and I have a GSA 1884CC that compares with it so I voted for 1884 and was only a year off…Spark
I picked 1883 because it’s a common date Yes it’s oval O. Not sure if it’s the left shifted mm vam though. Here’s one I sold a few months back.
Quite a lot to look through, though. Even just identifying one within a single year can be quite the task, and 1883 O has the most die pairings of all O minted Morgan’s if I recall. if not, it’s among them.
And certainly not if the VAM is derived from the obverse of the die pair. Showing only the reverse may not tell the whole story, but then it would render this thread pointless
Thanks but I'm missing something here. (The obverse image wasn't provided and if you are referring to the date, uh, yeah the date is on the obverse.) EDIT: I see your link now. Thanks. What was it about the reverse image you posted that was a giveaway as to the year it was minted? Like I said, I have very limited knowledge of Morgans and like learning new stuff. (Nothing jumped out on the reverse to point to a VAM and therefore a year.) Thanks and here's a copper one for you to guess the date if you'd like.
It might be most appropraite for you to start a new thread for your coin, and to put a poll on it, although I never heard of varieties for cents, but I never collected them.
New thread or not, are you going to answer his question(s)? @Cliff Reuter …I’m curious too… and based on the amount of wear on the cents’ steps from post #37, I guess anywhere from 1995 to the last year LMCs were made, 2008…Spark
