This is the other NNC-graded medal I got from one of my local coin shops for $1. The question is, what is the grade?
My grade 67 NNS 69 Never seen that medal before, I really don't know the luster? Neat though, glad you are sharing it!
Believe it or not, I had never seen this medal either! It was slabbed and something new, which is exactly why I wanted to share it. These medals, for me, are something I am very unfamiliar with, but if I buy them in token lots, I can always study them for a few minutes.
This is a reduced sized version of the Millard Fillmore Indian peace medal. It is modern creation that the mint once sold for $1 each with an eye toward young collectors. Like it is with everything else “mint,” the price is higher. I’ll post a picture of the 19th century version of this piece tomorrow.
What should I have responded in a different way? Just messing with ya Sal. I would like to see the original dies. You crack me up!
I have two of these medals, one weighs significantly more than the other: President Millard Fillmore Medal - Light Bronze, 33 mm, 16.98 gm President Millard Fillmore Medal - Heavy Bronze, 33 mm, 19.60 gm
Here is the 19th century version of the Millard Fillmore Indian Peace medal. This piece has a diameter of 76 mm (about 3 inches), and is listed in Julian as IP-30 Fillmore was not a popular president. The Fugitive Slave Law, which was part of the Compromise of 1850, did not help his reputation. Therefore the 19th century mintage was 12 pieces. An undisclosed number were made in the 20th century with the modern "yellow bronze" finish. I paid $750 for this one, but these medals have become more popular. The last time I tried to buy one of the series in a Heritage auction, I got run out of the building. My bid was not even close.
