Wow, that is some serious wood grain going on. It's hard to see the condition of the obverse. I'll just guess and say they gave it a 64.
ANACS did grade almost all of the woodies I submitted, but they sure did not like them. I was told that they would be downgraded because their color was not uniform (by their ex-finalizer), but I sure did not expect this. Apparently this one is just too variegated.
Ok humor me on this one. What is a 'woodie' and is that a variety that can be acknowledged on a slab?
No. Just an alloy mixing problem. If you are unfamiliar with them, look at this thread http://www.cointalk.com/threads/got-wood.65353/
I am not really sure what to say to be honest. Its nice and very woodie. Do woodies bring premiums? I assume so.
That's a ridiculous grade. I bet if they treated and attributed this as an improper alloy mix error the grade would have been higher.
I'm late but I would have graded the reverse a 64. Can't really tell much about the obverse because of the toning. It's a cool looking coin to me. Better than a 60.
It isn't the most lustrous coin I have, but 60 is just a joke to me. To me it is a 63/64 coin. Since they take off for the variegated coloring, I could see 62. But I really do not get the 60.
Most of them were not this ridiculous, but they were not loved by ANACS. However, almost all were graded rather than details. My objective was mostly to get them in slabs for protection/inheritance purposes. The one thing I wanted to avoid was genuine if possible. I have seen so many PCGS coins get genuine, I want to avoid them. That and about $10 per slab ($12 shipping included) swayed me to ANACS
60 seems a bit harsh for what's really a planchet defect, not a minting defect. Still, it does prove that the "new" ANACS does grade tough (something I've heard at coin shows a lot). Undergrading isn't any better than overgrading in my book though lol... while I defend ANACS a lot I think they seriously undergraded this one. "Woodies" have their defenders but TPGs don't like them much and tend to penalize them, not reward them. Still, all the way down to 60 seems a bit too harsh lol... 62, maybe I could see. But yeah, if you're just having them slabbed for protection/storage purposes, ANACS is the cheapest among TPGs that have any kind of a reasonable reputation.
