I was thinking impaired proof at first. But the weaker strike on the obverse seems to be a trait of the business strike. I like it as an AU55 but think it might be a slider. As high as MS62.
A quite nice coin. Lots of eye appeal, IMHO. I think it is AU 58 since I see hints of rub and it's in an older holder. Definitely weak strike on obverse, less so on reverse. Obverse looks like the die is a tired, it was just about the end of the series. Reverse also tired but less than obverse. If this was slabbed today. I think it would be MS 62 or 3.
Bingo. PCGS gave it MS-64. From the images I posted, it looks like a 58. One of the first things I look at on seated coins are the eagle's talons. I bought the coin from the first image posted about 15 years ago. The glamour shots messed up the thread a bit but brought the color out.
So a weak strike coin that spent a lifetime in a cabinet? The highpoints suggest rub/wear even if it got the originality bump. When did PCGS grade it?
I always thought it was MS. My only question was how high they would go, given the soft strike. The color is terrific.
I only wish I had one or could afford one. This year has been tough. I had about $8K withheld this year, but due to some business decisions, I had to choke up another $3,200 to the IRS.
