I like the overlap coins. 1909/S Indian head and Lincoln, 1938/D Buffalo and Jefferson, etc. I think my guys are only VF but I always liked them.
Even if there are those that "don't have time" to look at some of the minor variety's, there will always be a premium for the ones that aren't easily noticed. may not be the same price as a widely known variety, but a premium none the less.
The first Buffalo is MS65, @Paddy54 made me look at the MM again and see that the die deterioration below and to each side of the MM was a match. Definitely the determining factor in changing what I thought it to be. From a D/D west to the OMM-005 The second coin is a MS66 No one got the rpm correct it is an RPM-001 D/D/D south and west. As far as the winner goes most of you guessed 65, 66 So @C-B-D @SilverDollar2017 @Michael K @jtlee321 I am not sure why the 65 was dinged it looks as good as the second, and with a stronger strike.
The second was actually harder to make a call on as the image wasn't clear enough to determine so took an educated guess. Well craps I loose as for the first ive seen so many it was a had to be...as far as grades go to my eye both are 66 .and I agree why it got dinged a point lower is by me. Nice coins no matter what.
As a variety collector I totally disagree....there's plenty of variety coins that are both rarer, and hold greater values then well known varieties. Like any collector it depends on your interest one who collects Lincolns may have their eye on a 55 doubled die when in fact the other 55 DDO is rarer then the 55 DDO that everyone knows. And again it depends on what you collect. If you collect seated quateres the 55 DDO is yes a variety but not sought after by one who collects quarters. Collecting varieties the prize is the find, and the find in many cases is often traded or sold for another variety that interests the collector.
The only thing that I can think of is that the toning on the first one muted some of the flashy luster.
I thought the first one was a 65 because it didn't have the luster and clean fields of the second one. The first one just didn't have the look of the second one, which had more luster and fewer marks/stains than the first one.
Yes, I meant the slightly splotchy toning on the reverse below the buffalo. IMO, the second one just has better eye appeal.
Now to plant a seed......@Pickin and Grinin @jtlee321 You two do know about 37 D / D /D, and 37 S/S/S like 9 D's ans 6's There's 14. 36 D/D's and 11 36 S/S .......... Let's see how long this takes.......
Oh yeah, just haven't been chasing them. I do keep an eye out for an MS '36-S/S though, the big one...
