The Olathe and New York Bank were two different hoards. The New York Bank hoard was more recent (2018)...per Coin World: "A hoard of 16,000 Morgan dollars stored in canvas bags in a New York City bank vault since their purchase in 1964 from the Treasury Department stockpile will be placed on the market after all are graded and slabbed by Numismatic Guaranty Corp........... the son and daughter of the man who originally purchased the coins more than 50 years ago no longer wanted to continue paying the $800 annual rental fee for the roughly 3-foot by 3-foot by 4-foot safe-deposit box that houses the silver dollars........Garrett said the heirs do not want to be identified but just want to dispose of the hoard. Garrett said the heirs’ father worked in the financial district in lower Manhattan" https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/silver-dollar-hoard-from-1960s-government-sale.html The Olathe Hoard was a little earlier (2009)....per Conder: "The Olathe Dollar Hoard was a hoard of 25 original bags of dollars found in a bank in Kansas in 2009. Most likely acquired from the Treasury disbursal from the early 1960's." https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=108634
And I am now 98% positive she is a Vam 14a a sweet lil R-5 according to VAMWorld Won't be 100% until she's in hand but only 1 thing i can't see clearly enough in the pic's I have, but I see a shadow of it in these pics as well as all of the other indicators so I'm pretty sure I got it right
It's mostly common dates from what I have seen. There are some high grades though. Here is an excerpt from NGC about the NY Bank Hoard: "The remarkably well-preserved hoard boasts a number of high grade pieces, including 118 that graded NGC MS 67. Each canvas US Treasury bag in the New York Bank Hoard contained 1,000 Uncirculated Morgan Dollars of the same date and mintmark combination. Eleven different issues were represented: the 1878-S (one bag), the 1880-S (two bags), the 1881-S (one bag), the 1883-O (one bag), the 1884-O (one bag), the 1885 (one bag), the 1885-O (two bags), the 1886 (one bag), the 1887 (four bags), the 1888 (one bag) and the 1889 (one bag)." https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/6702/
Ok here she is in all here glory.. sellers pics were much closer to in hand then NGCs... I quite happy for the price and pedigree
Some people think including descriptives like hoards is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. At time it tends to be a bit made-up, but legit hoards are part of the storytelling and history behind our coins. Congrats on your nice coin !
I'm a little pumped right now. Just snagged this one from auction online at a decent price. I was searching Olathe Hoard and found this thread. I do believe I see a well defined die crack, so I'll be searching VAM World to identify it.
Nice pickup... I've got a lil side collection of "hoard" labels.. olathe, las vegas, stacks and bowers w57th and I include my shipwreck coins with them (atocha and el cazador at moment) but always on the lookout for more. As goldfinger said I like the added history/pedigree such a label adds
