An older slab so I'll say MS66.

Taking a better look going to take back the 5 full steps. 67*

I believe that MS67 5FS is the correct grade. There is some weakness on the 3rd & 4th steps under both the 2nd & 3rd pillar but under a loupe, neither is actually broken.

The key is that NGC didn’t start recognizing 5FS until after the old fatty slabs were retired. Back then, they only used the FS designation and that required 6 full steps. I’m going to be sending this coin in for designation review.

As promised, here is the slab photo which shows both the eye appeal and luster in a much better light.

That slab shot really shows the eye appeal. The coin just jumps out at you. It’s the sort of coin that you see in a dealer case that you can’t leave without.

Good luck on the FS designation!

NGC didn't begin recognizing 5 FS until 2003, so it is more than just the old fatties that can be cherry picked. I did this a lot a few years back, but see fewer and fewer examples out there.

I voted 66 5FS in the original poll. Your slab shot makes it look a lot better. I would have no problem with it as a 67 5 FS.

The coin will not make FS. There is only 4 steps under pillar 2. It’s really close, but no cigar. I wouldn’t spend the money re-submitting it, but Paul, you know more about this series than me.

I can only tell you what I see and that’s 5 steps under pillars 1 and 4, and more than 1 interruption in the area between.

Are you all forgetting to count the top stop?

I see five steps with full separation. I don't see the bottom step, but that isn't required for a 5 FS designation.

Yeah, but Mike, understand, you're not a professional grader, lol...

You are correct, sir, but Paul knows his nickels, so I give him benefit of any kind of doubt.

I just don’t think so, and he and I typically agree on nickels, so I had to try to figure out why.

I have other coins going to NGC and they don’t charge you the full fee for designation review. To me, it’s worth $10 to get it reholdered and possibly in 5FS which will add $200 to the value of the coin. There is weakness under the 2nd & 3rd pillar but I don’t see an actual break. And the photo makes the steps look weaker than they do in hand. I give it a 75% chance at 5FS, though I had a couple in my last submission that I thought would get 5FS that didn’t so we’ll see.

I’m planning to have this coin be my registry coin since I sold my MS68*, and honestly, this one has much better luster than the MS68*.
