Yeah I see hairlines to the lower left and all over the reverse. As well as the unnatural color and luster of a cleaned coin. The die crack is cool tho
Looks like struck thru next to "S" and a major die break. I'll guess label says: MS-62, major die break. MS-62 covers any rub (AU) or hairlines (mishandled). and...IMO, no TPGS would grade this coin AU and no dealer would sell it as AU. and...The OP knows how to present a coin in various positions to the light.
I think this sums it up well. The rub / mishandling on the reverse I feel is just that. A coin cleaned would more likely have hair lines on both sides. I also agree with Insiders other comments. The Rim is misaligned slightly making me a believer that the die broke and was held in place. It's a cool coin even with the hairlines.
You say you bought because of the reverse. So how does this example fit with your overall collection? The V nickel your specialty or perhaps die varieties?
Nickels in general are where I tend to focus although I have a little of just about everything - purposefully. I do not have many die varieties but the severity of this one caught my eye especially because it was a nickel. If it had been a dime I probably would not have given it a 2nd look. I am a big fan of collect what you like.
Don't see it. Besides, ICG (and possibly ANACS) would have put that on the label if it were. Forget the other two TPGS's. IMO, half of their guys never heard of a RPD but Rick and Jay At NGC and Fred at PCGS would have caught it.
I looked at it under a 30x loupe and I think what you are seeing are a couple hits in just the right places.
