Old ANA slab ....I will go with MS 64 (looks lustrous and semi-pl....not sure it is fully PL but it might be close...and it has the look of a gem but I think Anacs was conservative on it back in the day)
MS66 I know the 81s is known for great strikes and PL coins. Very nice coin. The detail in the hair over the ear is amazing, IMO.
80S, 81S, and 82S coins were stunning strikes not released into circulation and many escaped the Pittman Act, stayed in bags and not melted down. It's almost like the TPGs look down their noses at even PL examples. I call it DEI grading, so I give it a 64+ when it could go much higher. Toning always baffles me, that's a nicely toned coin but I've seen lesser examples in other dates with toning get the benefit of the doubt when they are not nearly as nicely struck as that. How much you want for it?
Having had nearly 100 Morgans graded by ANACS in the past year, IMO they are trying to atone for their sins in their blue holders and have left the reservation, going technically off the cliff. I think I'm going to start sending premium coins to PCGS from now on, and just send the lesser ones to ANACS.
I would call it 64 PQ. I'd want to see pix from different angles before I decided whether it had PL characteristics or not. (I suspect not quite?) I would have gone 65, except for that one heavier tickmark near 3:00 in the obverse field to the left of Star #8 and the M in UNUM. Nice lookin' coin, regardless of whatever the technical grade is.
By way of comparison, here is the coin that was my Morgan dollar type coin until I upgraded to an MS66+ last year. This one is PCGS MS65, in a standard blue-label holder:
This slab is much earlier than those designations. Maybe someone knows exactly when the star and + were first used. I believe from the info I have reviewed is that the * was first started by NGC in the early 2000-2002. And the + was first used by PCGS in 2008, then adopted by NGC.
I’d have to give her MS65. Would need at least MS66 money to let her go. Love the strong strike and subtle toning.
