I have a bunch of 65 PL Morgans that I have posted, that look exactly the same. I cannot see how they got the grade of 64 Non-prooflike. See no break in the mirrors, or anything else that would take that coin out of the PL category. Sorry, PCGS blew that one big.

My first impression was 64PL, since there is a prettysubstantial reed mark on the lower left obv. But I'm surprised it didn't get the PL designation! great looking coin.

How many of your coins are 1880-S?

I own 6 1880s coins, and multiples of most dates. Only one 1893s though.

My point is that the 1880-S is graded differently than most Morgans.

I will gladly bail you out of this dilemma for the aforementioned 70$ price tag;) That is a ridiculous value to place on a coin like that; what @mikenoodle says must be true.

    So are a lot of Morgans—1881s, 1882s, 1879s, etc.

agreed, but you know that they will always look better than their grade due to the high population of stunning coins from this mint and year. The San Francisco coins from the beginning of the series were struck with dies that never saw much wear. Consequently, the coins grade lower than a similar looking coin from a different date and Mint

Sometimes. I have thousands of Morgans. They have been the victim of market grading, obviously. Are certain dates held to higher standards? Of course. Still, based on the photographs, that coin in question should have graded as a 65PL. PCGS still blew it, in my opinion.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Why are some Morgan's graded differently than others? Shouldn't they all be graded the same? And why are people okay with different standards for different dates?

Because grading doesn’t occur across series, it occurs for a specific date and MM.

Why do we grade a 1922 Lincoln differently?

Was that a bait, Jason? I mean, you know a lot about grading, I thought you’d be explaining what I was saying rather than questioning it.

Had one heck of a week installing a new system at work, so I didn’t get a chance to visit your image thread and take my time to do it properly but will do before I submit it. Here’s some iPhone gifs for now. :)

Wonderful presentation of the mirrors. I don’t collect Morgan’s so I never knew how reflective they could be.

I think that those gifs show us a much better view of the coin.

It’s a shame it didn’t PL. I think that weak frost of the IBUS may have cost this coin. It’s just THAT hard to get PCGS to give an 80-S as PL, let alone DMPL
