As a coincidence, I stopped at a local coin shop and saw a raw 1938 Buffalo that caught my eye. It had great toning and I thought it had a fairly high grade. I bought it and brought it home, when I checked the mintmark I thought it was a D/D. I don't have a very good camera to take pictures of the slab, so you don't see the toning, but I do have digital microscope, so I was able to show the double mint marks. I sent it out to NGC and this is what came back:
Over mint mark...Paddy's post from Nov 2009 Coin Talk Here's another member of my heard.1938 D/D/D/S Buffalo Nickel.VP-001 OMM . Mintage 400,000 in the Varieties D/S D/D/S D/D/D/S . This Variety was only found in 1962!
Here's a '54 S/D Jefferson (another omm)...only 7 graded by PCGS... http://www.pcgs.com/cert/81411860
I'm thinking that this would go up a grade if I had it re graded . But I like her right where she is.....
The higher mag. sure helps and I can see the diff. in the S shape in the middle of the D...Thanks for the learning experience!
I should post the nickel as this jumps from around a $200 price point in 65 to $ 1800. In MS 66 Not that I would sell it...... my nickel varieties I'm taking with me
No mine is a MS 65 not a 66. I was just saying that if I sent it in for a up grade or cracked it out and sent it in it may get a 66 grade, since it's in an old Anacs holder. I don't like cracking the older holders. I have about 6 or 7 high value Jefferson variety nickels in these old Anacs holders.
OK, got it and I'm sure you got the same grades for a much better price. I know I paid near full price for my 38 D/S Buffalo...but it's a beauty...and it's mine!
