Toning contributes to (or detracts from) eye appeal. While eye appeal is in a gray area as far as it being a technical grading aspect, it definitely affects the bottom line grade of a coin. A flashy, well-struck coin with great surfaces can be ugly because of toning, and will be penalized in the grading room for it.

Here ya go. Flashy as can be, almost flawless surfaces (as clean or cleaner than all my 67s), hammered strike but splotchy unattractive toning (which I personally like - it has character!) keeps it at 66 and didn't sticker. John confirmed it was only the splotchy toning on the face that kept him from giving it a bean and acknowledged the great surfaces and luster. I really like this coin ugly or not it's just unique and I'm a sucker for luster.
