A very interesting GTG for sure. :smug: As of this writing, 38% of the vote was AU58. Fascinating, considering I cut this out of the original cellophane from a 1962 Mint Set. It's never seen circulation. I've had a growing fascination with high-grade US coins from the 1950s through to the end of the 60s. It appears that quality control from the branch mints was very poor from that time, and many circulation-strike coins suffer from trashed dies. Certain examples can be very expensive in gem condition. The 1962-D Nickel was no exception. My photography skills are still somewhat lacking-80-90% of the chatter on this coin can't be seen with the naked eye. The fields are very lustrous and clean, and the overall color is a light blue/purplish. Very pleasant to look at. I feel like my lighting setup did a real disservice to it, and the polling reflects that. @ddddd nailed it. It doesn't have a PL designation and doesn't deserve one IMO, but the luster flows a little different on the devices than it does in the fields. (I wonder if some people are mistaking it for wear) I think it's more due to die erosion than strike, but the coin is fairly well struck. I'm not going to lie, I thought the coin was nicer than a run-of-the-mill 65. I'd looked at a bunch of 62-Ds before sending this one in, and a lot are pretty rough. But that little chatter, if only seen with magnification, was probably too much to hold a 66, so here it sits. Not an expensive coin by any means, but a nice coin with good eye appeal. Glad to add it to my collection.
