Please guess the grade of the 1950-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 4 different things: the numerical grade, Full Steps, + grade, and * designation. As always, comments welcome!
Same as above. I see more than 1 break in the steps. I am not saying the slab doesn't say FS, I am saying I wouldn't qualify it. As for the grade I went 65. The reverse is nicer. I would have gone 66, except there is so much cheek chatter and 2 of the marks are practically gouges so that dropped it a point for me.
I bid on this one when it first came up for auction and was the under-bidder, so I won't guess. I will say that there was another 50-D in the same exact grade in that auction which I thought better fit the grade (that one went for more than 2x this one).
You guys are a little harsh on this coin. The luster and eye appeal are off the charts and the surfaces despite the marks on the cheek are still MS66 quality. The jawline shows remnant planchet roughness which doesn't affect the grade. Still, there is absolutely reasonable explanation for why this coin doesn't have a star. My only guess is that they actually bumped the grade to MS67 rather than calling it an MS66* which is the grade that it deserves IMO. I was hoping that it would have a chance at full steps based on the seller's photo but that looks like a no go. Still one of the most impressive 1950-D Jefferson Nickels I have ever seen.
While it looks better in the last photo in the holder than the OP, I thought these areas with metal missing would have lowered the grade.
When I was bidding on the coin that @Lehigh96 posted, I was also bidding on the coin below. Both had the same grade, but to me this coin looked to be more deserving of the 67 grade (as it didn't have the level of hits as highlighted in the post above). To me that coin was a 65+ (and I do think both deserved the star).
Do us a favor and post both of the Great Collections photos for each coin side by side so we can see an apples to apples comparison.
Here it is copied over from the star thread. And I was comparing the GC photos when saying the star is 1-1.5 pts nicer. https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/804857/1950-D-Jefferson-Nickel-NGC-MS-67-Toned https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/804858/1950-D-Jefferson-Nickel-NGC-MS-67-226-152-133-Toned
I missed the original post until now. Beautiful coin. Does this mean your quest for this coin is finally over? I am surprised how much it looks like the one I have. MS66+
Probably not, I’m never gonna be happy with a coin that has MS66 surfaces that is graded MS67 despite how beautiful the toning is. I will probably stick with my current MS67 5FS coin for the time being.
See https://www.cointalk.com/threads/animation-and-coin-photography.297411/ It’s only a few pages long, but covers the fundamentals. The technique improves towards the end of the thread.
