Don't you hate it when the dealers [or auction houses] put their stupid stickers on the back & destroy part of the label. They should know better.
Yeah I was pissed my new 1899 morgan came with a sticker completely covering the back label.. fortunately it came off cleanly but they not alway so nice...
My war nickels were encased in a plastic holder and all have a yellowish toned color. I have now placed them in 2x2's View attachment 1341728 View attachment 1341728 View attachment 1341728
I like the coin but it appears that it has been in a poor environment. Along with the older slab which were not, shall I say, exactly air tight. I would put it in a safer location, leave it alone, and enjoy what you have. Thanks for posting it.
I also hate what stickers did to the back of the old holders but, I don't think the dealers were aware of the problem until it was to late. I have a few with the same problem. One thing I learned the hard way was to remove any auction stickers as soon as possible. If you don't the glue from the sticker could transfer to the slab and be a real pain to remove.
64 with ugly toning on the obverse, but then I'm not a fan of toning. Others may see it as beautiful.
Almost certainly. Those early Fatty holders did some awful things to surfaces of many really nice coins.
I'm not shocked but, I bet the coin looked different when it was first slabbed. Honestly it's hard to tell if a coin will change over time in the slab. If a coin looks good in an old slab it most likely won't change over time. The environment the coins are stored in is extremely important.
I had this coin at MS67 in the other threads, and while it is possible that this coin turned in the holder, my guess is that it was graded like this. NGC loved crusty war nickels with ultra clean surfaces back in the "old fatty" days in the 90's.
