Please guess the grade of the 1945-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or 6FS or NOT FS, and + grade. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
Steps got a little tricky (looks like a die crack running with the steps?) and if not for the one spot on the lower cheek, this might grade as high as a 67. Another fine specimen!!
I may be way off base here, but I believe I see some light wear on both sides. The steps are a little questionable under that 4th pillar. I’m going to assume it is in an older NGC holder. I may be totally wrong on this one, but I’m going to stick to my guns and say AU-58 5FS. If its in PCGS plastic just AU-58.
I like it but I think the spotting and what appears to me to be stain around the date are going to be issues for it in the market. Still, I can't see it going lower that MS65, and 5 Full ones.
66 5fs...I think the area under the fourth column has two steps blended (otherwise it could go 6fs)....overall the coin is decent but the spot on the cheek bothers me
I went FS even though it appears to have a small area of missing details on the right. Looks like a little die chip. These days, I think the graders would overlook it. I also went high at MS67 because technically, I do not see any hits. It isn't the best for the grade but it's what I think is on the slab.
I went MS60 to 64. Looks like there are a few wispy looking contacts to the coin, not enough to Au the coin though. Also I still think that NGC gave this coin 5FS, even with the die crack running thru the steps.
66 5FS. The reverse is fairly well struck, and the steps are pretty distinct. The spotting on the obverse, plus a few dings would be enough to keep it under 67, IMO.
Spots on cheek, collar and between the Ls on Monticello are troublesome. Wondering how the grader handled the right side of the steps. 65, 5FS.
