Please guess the grade of the 1944-S Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, the * designation, and + grade. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
No option for FS? This one is tricky because, as I'm interpreting the images, there are a couple of scuff marks on Jefferson's shoulder, and the obverse luster isn't great. I'd put the obverse at 64+. The reverse, however, is a strong 66 - good luster, great eye appeal, and pretty much zero marks anywhere. Put the two together, and I'm at 65. Now, if the obverse does have better luster than that image shows, I might be at 65+
I suppose I should just go ahead and add a point to my analysis because I'm always low compared to the TPG when it comes to your nickels
I was at 64 until I read @physics-fan3.14 post. Now I'm with him. See how easily I can be swayed. LOL I'm not good at grading, but know what I like, so the TPG ain't gonna make any money from me. Nice coin, period.
I choose MS64. I feel the nicks on Mr Jeffersons' collar and the poor strike on the reverse would hold it back despite the good surface preservation.
I generally like the strikes on the war nickels. The metallic nickel planchets are harder than the silver used during the war. So often the cheek and jacket show roughness where the metal was not forced up into the die, but this one is free of any distractions. The reverse is terrific. There are a few marks on the obverse and one in the middle of the reverse, so I stayed at MS65. Moving up to 66 is tempting.
MS64. Some chatter on the collar brings the grade down a touch but I think that bit hit on the reverse is the grade killer. That hit limits an otherwise lovely coin to a 64.
