Please guess the grade of the 1942-S Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or NOT FS, and + grade. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
MS 65 5FS ....steps just make it to five (small breaks likely not enough to prevent the designation)....obverse looks to have some die polish (so I'm guessing it has a semi-pl look)...and a few too many marks to get to 66 in my opinion
67 I bet this is a luster bomb in hand. The die polish parks are a bit much for me. Those make me want to say 66 but I don’t think the graders deduct for their presence although they were distracting for me. I think the steps don’t pass due to the bridging and hit between columns 3 and 4.
Nice coin but not seeing anything above a 64 .....no FS as its close and depending on who graded it ...but the chatter on the steps kills it for me. Unfortunately I have had my share of close but no cigar on steps as such. Grading from a photo of war year nickels can be a crap shoot. Weak strikes, relapped dies lines, and the fact that most probably the better machinist were used in war effort plants. The 43P probably is #1 in variety coins 70 + rpm's and how many DDO's and DDR's?
I said 5+ not FS. I’m probably analyzing the zoomed in photos too much but I saw what I thought were too many small tics to make 66 and there’s two separate spots where two steps merge together.
66, 5 full steps. It is a nice, bright coin, with great luster. I don’t see a rationale for the lower grades.
I think you guys are adapting to the toughness of the overall grading of this submission. I had expected MS66 5FS on this coin; I was disappointed. Please click the link below if you would like to participate in my next GTG thread. GTG 1944-P Jefferson Nickel (NGC)
