I am late to this party, but IMO the strike is 64 level max. So there's zero chance it gets a 67 upgrade.
The vast number of tickmarks covering the buffalo's shoulder and body, and the number of tickmarks on the guy's cheek. There are quite a few other small marks scattered across the coin. No doubt the luster is fantastic, as Lehigh mentions, but this coin should not make 67.
You guys are being really hard on this coin, in hand it is tremendous. I examined next to another 38-D graded MS67 and this coin was superior, though not struck as well as the MS67.
We must agree that there are what we consider to be overgraded, as well as undergaded coins. Add in the fact that we're looking at pics, and do not have the coin in hand as the TPGS do. That being said, even a fairly graded coin can either upgrade, or downgrade, if submitted often enough.
I have looked at, held and own many buffalo nickels. I have quite a few 66's in my collection, many that were graded long ago. From the pictures (and I suspect that it looks even better in hand) this one beats most of mine and others. While I agree that the strike is not what I would call "hammered", I think all around this coin is superior as Paul states.
Now why would you cross it to ngc and lose the ogh pcgs. I’d have sent to cac and hoped for gold to me the coin is worth more in a green holder pcgs 66 than a new ngc 67
For several reasons, first, a CAC sticker adds very little value to an MS66, its still a $50-$75 coin unless it has rainbow toning. An NGC MS67 will sell for $150+. If the PCGS OGH holder was so valuable, how was I able to get the coin for $40? My main reason is that I’m an NGC guy. There are a ton of people on this forum who seem hate PCGS, but very few who actually fight the PCGS hype by actually choosing an alternative grading company. I admit, it’s against the grain, but if I have a chance to make a profit by crossing a coin to NGC from PCGS, I will take it. Lastly, I don’t have submission privileges to CAC, but I wouldn’t use that option even if I did.
