63-64 depending on the TPGer and the day of the week.

It's a really nice looking coin with a lot of pizzazz to it. What strikes me as especially interesting about it from a historical perspective is that it's doubtful that in 1936 anyone in a position of relevant authority and/or power would likely have had even the slightest bit of hesitation or attendant scruples in regard to a) putting an image of the Confederate battle flag on a United States of America coin and b) demonstrating by the depicted equal memorial treatment of the two parties to the Civil War that both had in fact been pursuing ends of acceptably equal moral justification and merit.

Yeah, well, fast forward to today when everything must be politically
correct and past history is obliterated to the point that it never existed.........

Heck dang, dandy grade. I missed the call though. Didn't think it had a chance at '65.

Not sure if I said it here or a different forum, but I think PCGS is liberal by 1 point on the old silver commems. I think this would be a 64 at NGC.

I was slightly disappointed when I got the coin, as I hand't noticed the hit on the shield, but it is still a nice coin.

The thread had started to get political, and I asked what's going to happen when I do a GTG for an Antietam (another CW related commem), but then the political comment was edited, so my response was moot. Hence... the 'dot'. :penguin:

Ok.........more casualties that day than any other battle in US history. Heck. The Civil War had more deaths than all other US engagements combined. Gives ya feel for the passion of the day..........

A lost generation, and young women marring older men.........the young ones were gone.

Such a tragic part of our history... Which makes it that much more important to never forget it. I'm glad the US Mint in it's historical wisdom chose to commemorate something that should be remembered for the next 500 years plus... Because we know those would never be made today. Not to mention, who know's what kind of computer generated laser etched garbage they would try to pass off today as art if it were...

Now, now.......there are idiots who most appreciate the 'garbage'. Let's just say that designs both classic and modern will endure......

Let's just say that technology does not improve everything.. Every time I see the "Laser enhanced frost" of modern proofs, I shudder and puke a bit in my mouth. It just looks so artificial, you can see the pattern created by the computer. Whereas back just ten years ago, you could see how the random microscopic effect of sand blasting created a much more esthetic look to the frosted cameo. Just saying.... ;)

Completely agree. I have a few modern quarters in PF70 and the eye appeal difference in the portraits in particular between the State and ATB's is not subtle.

George just looks kinda 2D and almost pixelated in the later ones, IMO.
