On my phone, that doesn’t even look gold. More like toned silver. I can only find a handful of very minor nicks in the obverse. Is that a fingerprint on the reverse? I wanted to say 66, so I will go with 65. Edit: doh... those are sunrays. I’m an idiot.
MS-64. It has some tick marks. On positive is that the coin does not seem to have any copper spots. The vast majority of these coins seem to have them. I have always liked this coin although a lot of coin dealers dislike, some intensely. I have a soft spot for Philadelphia. When I was young, it was the place I got to go to find good coins. I grew up in rural Delaware, and coin shops did not exist there. On a few of these coins that I have seen, the sunshine rays around Independence Hall really set the reverse off. It’s a beautiful effect with the gold making the backdrop work, but you don’t see it often. I had one such piece that I sold to a want list customer when I was a dealer.
It's been getting a lot cheaper in recent years. Since it's only a $2.50 gold piece, the bullion probably has not pulled it up that much.
No you aren't. When I first saw pictures of a Sesqui I thought the same. ... ok maybe we're both idiots :-D It's either a weakly struck MS62 or a nice AU55. Need better pics to make the call...
Here are two views of the piece in my collection. It's in an MS-64 holder. Now that the prices have dropped, I'd love to find and MS-65 or 66, but the higher grade pieces are not any better than this. Some of that is due to "grade-flaiton" and some of it is due to the nature of the beast. It is not a well made coin. View One View Two
Just curious....what does this coin cost approximately and where is the inflection point in the MS numbers where the price jumps a ton ?
Copy that. And that’s exactly the reason why I bought the nicest 63 out there @GoldFinger1969 just look at the price guide and auction results for the Sesquicentennial: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1926-2-50-sesquicentennial/7466
I'm leaning towards ms66. I also have one of these and love it. Mine has the most pronounced sunrays I could find, and about 1/3 of the examples I looked at had virtually imperceptible ray .
