We have had major Spectrum internet outage.. just received this...going with MS 61. The reverse die state is between late and terminal.

They refund half the fee, so $9.

How weak does the D have to be to call it a "Weak D"? Is there some other die marker that delineates that? Because your D looks pretty weak, but it is still clearly there.

Actually that's a free designation, so I see now they refunded the whole amount.

Here's a blurry close up pic of a weak D.

    And a slabbed example.
1922 Weak D, Lincoln wheat cent graded XF-45 by PCGS. This coin has a very faint small D Mint-Mark that is barely visible when the coin is tilted at certain angles.

The grade of this coin shows you that you can't grade all Wheaties by the strength of the lines in the wheat stalks. I have a reference book by Taxay that states that you can tell a genuine no D 1922 because it will have a shadow D. When I was roll searching in the 1950s, I found one like this. Too bad I didn't keep it.

VF - Obverse us decent, but reverse drags it down, although 1922 was known for fairly weak strikes.

I see the luster, but IDK how it can be MS.
I understand about the worn and overused dies. But does that really
excuse the worn look? I have a 22-D with a strong reverse
so you can get lines in wheat stalks on a 22-D.
I can't go over AU because there are enough circulation scratches IMO to disqualify it from being MS.

I was torn between 61 and 62 initially. I thought there were enough marks to call it 61.

In order to be 63, I'm guessing the luster must be much stronger on this coin in hand than comes across in your pictures.

This has been a fascinating and highly educational thread. Thank you!

And thank you for your contributions. Thanks to everyone! Some good info, opinions, and facts about strike vs. wear. Hope we all keep learning.

I thought the big hits on the obverse from the nostril down to the chin and on the ear along with the dozens of scattered nicks would bring it down to 62.
