That is a coin I would love to have - to teach collectors the difference between strike and wear. And CAC even agreed with the grade to boot!
I didn't think there were any MS guesses. I must have overlooked your guess. Weak strike -vs- wear is tough to tell unless you have experience, knowledge of the series, and or proper training.
Huh. That's one I'd have to see in hand. I think if we were more familiar with the strike characteristics of these, we might have gotten closer. Well, that was interesting.
My first thought was 64 with a crappy strike. The luster is full and unadulterated in the fields. That led me to the MS conclusion. The scratches beneath STATES OF keep it out of gem, and the weak strike solidifies the non-gem grade.
This really helps to show the difference between a weak strike without wear -vs- a stronger strike with wear. As Finn was eluding to.
When that’s the case, I always look at the fields. If there are breaks in the luster, it is AU. I did not see any breaks on this coin
Well, I was 'way' the devil off base. "ya pay '64 money for this gem? I think the color bumped it a bit. It is a tantalizing beauty.
I paid up for it, but it sold on Legend for well over twice what I paid for it less than a year ago so I figure I did ok.
Way better than OK......nice flip. I like to keep what I kill, but sometimes I do speculate for profit. Then 'plow' it into what I enjoy collecting.
This is what British grading would call "VF - as struck". Meaning the coin has the details of a coin in VF grade, but has no wear - it is uncirculated. I've had Morgan dollars in XF as struck, but nothing this poorly struck. Thanks for sharing.
Ah, I didn’t phrase that well... I meant less than a year ago it sold for over 2x what I just won it for at auction last month. At this point if I end up taking a hit on things I just see it as my fee for the hobby... I’d be spending way more money than that on green fees playing golf if I didn’t collect coins. Interesting and thanks, I’ve never heard those terms before but I like it. No problem, makes for something out of the ordinary anyway. If anyone ever comes across someone who specializes in these or sees another like it, please let me know. I wondered if it might also have been a later die state and would love to learn more about them.
