GTG 1916 Mercury 104 year old dime .
Very difficult coin to image... plenty of luster under that 104 y/o skin.

Whoa... that's quite a neat dime!!

I'd imagine it's around MS65FB, though the way the light is hitting the reverse, this could be incorrect.

The original coin looks really sharp under the toning. I don’t collect dimes, but the reverse looks prooflike. MS 65 FB. Coin almost looks like a proof to me.

That reverse looks proof but not sure.

    definitely looks FB.

I’d say it’s 65, maybe 66. The spitting on the obverse is messing with me a little bit.

Hard to tell if it’s all spotted toning or if there are some hits. I’d carefully guess MS64FB.

I agree - it does look proof; especially the "square" rim on the reverse. But if I'm not mistaken, proof Mercury dimes were only struck 1936-1941.

    Edit - @Morgandude11 is 100% correct; 1936-1942. My bad :)

Does anyone know the correct terminology for this type of toning?
As the dime shows the same sort of toning as this peace.
It seems to start or effect the higher points on the coin.

Not sure about the terminology but i read Peace Dollars do not tone like Morgans because the metal has less contaminates in it and when they do it's this type of brownish color Walkers have similar toning. I wish i could take great pictures like you do!:banghead:

Yes i have several but not fully toned like yours which is a very interesting specimen as usual extremely nice! They normally tone around the rim and have spots.

This Mercury for the time peroid that it was graded was most probably spot On!
I disagree with some of Anacs soap bar slabs.
Anacs seems to hit a grade spot on and again miss it by a mile.
This specimen is just about perfect...Nice hammered strike perfectly centered so yeah it looks like a proof strike.
What killed this coin? And a really nice Buffalo I got for only 10 bucks.
Anacs must of graded some scratches by lowering the grade and others gave a detail grade.
This coin has a staple scratch on the reverse...in fact there are 2 that are just that a staple scratch.....there are no other marks in the fields.
I do believe that most of you guessed a grade that is truer that the one a signed.
The two scratchs are at the D in Dime. 20200602_172131.jpg C:WINDOWSTempE948 - 20200602_171707.jpg

A gain what a great Coin and picture! A lot of early grading seems to be either way lower as in this case or to high. I have some ANACs photo grades Peace Dollars most say MS -64 or 65. I have 10 Old David Hall’s blue flips everyone is MS-65? The 1946-S Walker is under graded as is the 1940-D Quarter. Again I wish that I could take better pictures like you do so that I could share them.
