Thanx for sharing buddy.. that actually brings this to a great point,,, you have to know the characteristics for each date and MM to properly evaluate and grade morgans... nice coin btw i think both our coins.compare nicely to one another.... thanks again
Wow, I didn't see that one coming. I would have guessed 64 from the overall surfaces--not a super strike, and some chatter here and there. Would not have thought a 65. Oh well!!!
Chatter??? Maybe i need to use a camera instead of my phone for pics... to me chatter is several light scratches in a concentrated area.... this coin shows no such thing... its that super dark toning where it was no doubt been up again a canvas bag for a prolonged timeframe... its giving it a weird rubbed/scuffed look.. thats my only regret with this one,,,,.if the obv.matched the rev. I feel this could go 66+ easily... but i actually love this coin... in hand it has a great combintaion of eye appeal/luster/toning... its just got that look...but thanx 4 replying and being honest... everyone else scattered like roaches lol
Yea it went 65... im finding that toned coins are hard to view w cell phone pics,, i wont even bother to put my other toners on here until i find the usb for my camera
I don't think it's a matter of cell phone pics. I can get some nice photos using my phone. I the issue with your images is the lighting.
Some toners even the best lighting will not show the coin as it really is - just because of the toning and how it looks. Me - from the first set of photos I would have guessed AU, but would not argue with an MS grade without seeing the coin in hand. I have seen a couple like this at the local coin shop - while I believe they are MS, I would not buy them just because of the toning and the way it made the coin look in hand. Still nice looking coin.
You simply need two gooseneck desk lamps with you choice of bulb. I prefer florescent bulbs because they work well with my camera. Place the lights at 10 & 2 and try to ensure that the light does not overlap the coin and then snap away. Here is a photo I took with my iPhone4 several years ago using that setup. For toned coins, I often place a coin or poker chip under the bottom of the slab in order to slightly angle the face of the coin into the lights. Many people add a third light at 6 o'clock for large coins like Morgan Dollars.
There... now it has been dually noted. Seriously though, WalMart carries a fairly decent gooseneck lamp (with metal shade and weighty base) for around $7, or at least they were a few years ago. Either way though, they're cheap and should last you a good many years.
Target also carries cheap desk lamp / gooseneck lamps, which I use. $15 each or so. I recommend CFL bulbs, around 5000k. 23watt will give you like 1200 lumens each, alot of light.
I use two gooseneck lamps with CFLs also. I probably paid $20 for the pair at Menards several years ago.
I really couldn't tell much from the pics. To me looked like wear. Better pics If I saw the luster and whether there was actual wear or weak strike. My 1896
Nice coin,,,.i was under the.impression.that.this.date wasnt known.for.real nice toners.. ur.coin shows some.of.the.same.weakness.on hair/cotton bolls as the others.. ..interesting. ....thx.4.sharing.........im off to the jackets game!! Great seats.,.10 rows from ice!!
Sounds like fun. There's some decent 96 toners out there if you look hard. I buy morgans primarily for toning
There is no chance that that coin would go 66, with a below average strike and obvious contact marks on the obverse fields.
I never said it FO SHO WOULD GO 66!!! I said.if.the obv/rev matched... as in color.. and u.dont know.that FO SHO either ..if you paid attention u would see this date seems to be a lil weakly struck.......,,,,,,,,,,contact marks on obverse fields??? Ur seeing ghosts man ......surface.pres. ,,...eye appeal could upgrade it.on a given day.. cause shes a looker......im naming her blueberry....chocolate....blue jackets won 4-3 ... it was a great hockey game to attend!! Thanx all 4 sharing/ discussing!!
No, I am not seeing ghosts-- they are there. Just accept that it is a nice MS 65, and don't go all ape over it.
