Honestly, the coin looks like it has a weak strike, it was never harshly cleaned, circulated but not cleaned, And probably down graded because of appearance rather than wear.
I know Morgan Dollars as well as anybody who has posted on this site. It was absolutely 100% with certainty cleaned. I posted the specific marks that indicated the cleaning. This is not rocket science—PCGS blew the grading on this coin. The reverse has huge scrubbed patches on it, where it was wiped or scrubbed. In those days said cleaning was often done with a toothbrush, or polishing cloth. There are swirl marks on the obverse, indicating a polishing. I agree that the coin is AU, but it is 100% certainly cleaned. It is clearly a details coin. PCGS market graded it because of the date. If it did not have toning, you would clearly see the patches where it has been cleaned. I sent pictures of this coin by text message to a friend of mine who works for PCGS’ competition. His response was “are they kidding?” His professional opinion was that the coin was cleaned, and market graded. This happens ALL THE TIME, so say I, and an expert on grading. Also, to set things straight, 1893 Philadelphia is not a weak strike date.
