The Columbian is a very difficult coin to grade in my opinion. What looks like rub on the cheek and hair is almost always just a relatively weak strike. This coin has very clean fields, and is almost mark free. I think it borders on 66, and in a way I'm surprised it didn't, maybe the imperfect toning hurt it? (ie; the line in the toning gives it negative eye appeal?)
I do think that line hurts it a bit. That was what I suggested originally (although I penalized the coin too much for it).
I agree. The Columbian half dollar is tough to grade. What looks like a rub on the cheek might be due to a less than perfect strike. I bought this one from a dealer who submitted it twice to PCGS for an upgrade beyond MS-63 in 1994. He gave up and I paid him MS-64 money for it. This one was stored on the little pouch you see here for many years. It's still a raw coin. I collected it for the "issue pouch." The pouch was really a third party add-on at the 1893 Exposition. The coin really looks like this. The first photo was overexposed because of the pouch. Yes, there is a finger print on the reverse.
@johnmilton I think your '92 has a good shot at 65 by today's standards. From your images, I can't see why it wouldn't. Nice coins, and I love the pouch!
