Thanks for the additional pics! They confirm the MS grade. I still maintain 63 for the reasons outlined in my first post - but the new pics make me more confident that this is MS (I, too, debated the AU grade when I saw the first post).
Somebody getting impatient? Here, see how this holds you... A deer, a duck and a giraffe are winding down a night of drinking in a bar when they begin to argue over who is going to pay the tab. The deer says, "Hey, I'm good for a couple bucks." The duck says, "No, really, I got the bill." The giraffe says, "Forget about it, the highballs are on me!"
I'd love to see what you could do with it under your lens. My desk lamp / iPhone setup is pretty crude. I'll post the grade on the slab first thing tomorrow morning.
Here's the slab. Thanks for all your input. I guess the only question now is whether or not to pursue scregrade in search of MS65. The value spikes between 64 and 65 but not enough between 63/64 to make it worthwhile.
Yeah, that's no 63. In my opinion, their issue is going to be just what you said, 64 or 65. In that slab, that should get the gold from CAC, in my opinion.
They're far scarcer at the higher grade level; not sure if the TPG is factoring strike and eye appeal that strongly at 65. Yours is poorly-struck but not lacking in luster; had I seen it last night I'd probably have guessed it one grade high. I don't see it as a candidate for cracking. PCGS is grading very conservatively these days (when they're actually paying attention to what they're looking at) and I'm not sure it'd upgrade at all, much less two grades. In the real world, it's probably more valuable in the slab it currently has. People still see those old slabs as "wow, this one should be a candidate for upgrade!" instead of "wow, if it's still in the old slab it probably doesn't stand a chance of upgrading because you know somebody's already tried before!"
I would not crack it and resubmit to PCGS, I'd send it to CAC. If it regraded at a 64, people will think it's maxed out in a new holder. If you send it to CAC and it get's a green bean, then you can ask 64 money for fairly easy, without incurring the grading costs. If it get's a gold bean, then you can ask for nearly 65 money. People will end up paying it, because it's a rattler that is obviously under graded with a CAC blessing.
Unfortunately, CAC is not accepting any new memberships and I am new to the coin world. Any suggestions? Do they sticker at shows?
Don't think it would make grade because of the weak strike. Has great luster, but the strike prevents a high grade. I would have guessed 64, but I don't think it will make the 65 you really need to make a submission worth it.
You should be able to find a dealer near you who can submit to CAC for you. There are also a few of us members on here who can submit to CAC as well.
