I went to the desk out in front of the doors and inquired about you. They said you were probably roaming around so I went looking. I took a little age from your avatar into account but I was looking for that tom sellek stash. That's probably what threw me from finding you lol. How did you find the energy compared to past WFoM's? I was a touch disappointed in that regard but got to hang with a bunch of guys that don't usually come out to Cali. And how'd you like the House of Mouse?

I thought it probably pullled a 64 in ngc but didn't see enough PL from the pics for the designation. Sweet :)

I can see where the PL is now that I know it's there, but adequately photographing a PL coin can be a challenge. It's all about the angle of the lighting with the camera's lens line. Many PL coins can only be appreciated in motion. Then add in the plastic creating its own reflection, oy! Nice coin, Alan.

Disneyland was smaller than I expected but I got to walk around munching on a big ol' turkey drumstick. Good stuff. I got lots of nighttime pics; my Sony a6000 does a nice job in low light.

The ANA show? Well, I talked to quite a few dealers who were unhappy with the crowd and business. This I can tell you- the vibe was 10 TIMES the vibe at Dallas in March. That was just pitiful. On the other hand, the high end dealers were pleased. So. Cal. Bifurcated market. Ya think? Saturday was gangbusters, and not just Scouts and other carpet rodents. Do you think maybe having free admission on Saturdays skews the crowd for religiously cheap people like midrange collectors?

Without the stash I look more like William Shatner, the old version doing Trek conventions.

    MS63 imo
    AND:

There are 2 points I'd like to, well, point out about this coin.
#1- if this was in an old holder, I would reject it as a true prooflike, not being up to snuff with today's stricter standards.
#2-the tpgs aren't as (tough) on PL/DPL coins as they are on business strikes, weren't we all learnt, that a big scratch or rim ding automatically lowers the grade by 1 point?

Yes, I think we all were "learnt" sumpin' like that, but I unlearnt it just as easily. There's no longer an ANYTHING that automatically does ANYTHING to the grade of ANYTHING. There're too many variables going into modern grading - wear, hits, die state, strike quality, even (gawd, forgive me) color. Do try to drop anything you ever learnt that includes the word "automatically". That's over.

Looks toned to me, add 40% to the sales price. !!:joyful:

There's not too much I agree with here. It's almost universally agreed that grading standards have become loosened over the years and not the other way around. Why do you think that many will pay a premium for old holders?

Subtract your 40 percent. It ain't toned.

Suppose my photographs do one positive thing -- show how easy it is to misrepresent a coin on a picture.:wacky:

I know your more of a PROOF than a PROOFLIKE GUY, grading standards have gotten stricter for prooflike & dmpl coins, and being that this is a new-ish holder I dont have a problem w the grade. Just stating that IF it was an old holder, it MIGHT not get that same PL endorsement today

I did not know that. Thanks for another chapter in The Education of a Coin Collector.

I knew it was not toned, just adding a bit of levity as I only collect toned morgans and speaking of color I just found out that my partner "that" I have been taking to shows "and" he confirms the toned Morgan purchases I make are a good deal.
Is color blind as all dogs are, who knew??

A colorblind collector of toners. Consider my mind blown!

Nah, blind guys umpire baseball and have for decades. Same thing. I've decided, especially after seeing Rick Snow's ANA talk last week, that I'm more convinced than ever that toner guys are a breed apart. Some people love 'em, others frankly hate 'em. Grading needs to be toning agnostic and maybe add a suffix, but keep color out of the base grade.

Let me be sure I understand - you're saying it's harder now to get a PL or DMPL? Or that they're harder on the numeric grade of PL's? I find this fascinating. Are some of yesterday's DMPL's going to grade down to PL now too if resubmitted?

I'm saying it's harder to get a PL / DMPL now, but they are actually less critical of the numerical grade if that makes any sense

I'm sure it make sense to them, and I'd like to see them explain some of this stuff at major conventions/shows that have talks.
