PS: looking only at the first set of pics, I would have said AU53/55, but the other set reveals the cleaning

 

MS details, agree it looks like an old cleaning.

This coin still has me somewhat stumped. I have another 1883 No Cents that has the same "style" of hairlines, and it too still has luster. Another forum member has reached out to me to tell me about his 1883 No Cents that has also has the same look and style to the hairlines as mine.

Because I have 2 coins that are so similar in look and style of the 'imperfection', I wanted to get at least one of them graded to settle whether it was cleaned or not.

When I first got the grade results, I was convinced it should have been details, and part of me still is, but now I'm just more confused on this coin.

There's a reason I don't collect nickels!

 

I called it die scrub. It doesn’t in the pics go across the portrait and i see nothing unnatural but I don’t get s great read in this from the pics
