I know it is a toxic slab, but who cares? It is a typical GSA type baggy common date cc Morgan that would grade 64 anywhere else. At least, the coin won't get beat up any more. It certainly isn't crossing.
Yeah, but it should be treated as raw anyway--better in that thing than in a flip. Not worth the submission money, as it isn't coming back out of the ordinary GSA range Morgans--probably grade a 64 or 64+ at the most.
I agree that it'll probably grade 64, but if you try selling it in that holder, you'll get all sorts of excuses for a buyer wanting to pay 10% back of MS60 bid -- "probably cleaned," "taking on a lot of risk it'll grade at all," "might not be real," "I need to pay for regrading plus shipping and handling," ... It's not worth sending in for grading by itself. Few coins worth less than $500 are, given all the postage and handling expenses. Piggyback with someone else's economy or bulk order.
Amen. I wait until I get about 15-20 raw coins and run an economy so it averages out to about $20 a coin. Anything better then an off brand slab. I don't even look at coins that are in them usually when at a show. I look at pcgs ngc anacs and raw and usually dismiss everything else as a problem coin unless it's real flashy
Here's a pic of the NTC with a closeup of the cheek: Here's a pic of a MS64 CAC in an OGH with a close up of the cheek: Which coin looks better?
6 of one half dozen of the other I'd buy the pcgs anytime if they were even money to save grading fees of cracking the other out. Cause as a dealer I couldn't sell the coin in the ntc slab
@Sean5150 , the first new pic of the 1883 obverse makes the coin seem nicer, but I still don't think it's a 66. IMO, to many marks and abrasions; however, I could see it as an upper end 64, possible low end 65.
I can finally give an update. Cracked it out, sent it to PCGS and the grade is (drumroll) MS65+! I guess the old saying "buy the coin, not the holder" works both ways. I also did the secure service because it gives you the fancy pic, it's pretty cool. But I have learned that those pictures hide a lot but at the same time mute some cool toning. Also, sending coins in is like going to Vegas. I'll post some GTGs so you can see what I couldn't. Here's the fancy pic: Edit: Waiting for "that's not the same coin", "graders have gotten too liberal","you got lucky", etc.
All I saw is the picture. They saw the coin. As far as arguing with the grade is concerned, I'm in the weaker position here, so all I can say is, "Congrats!"
Very nice pick up!! As the saying alway's goes.. Buy the coin and not the holder. You did just that and scored amazingly well. Congrats.
It's the same coin, no doubt about it. However, I tend to agree with the lucky sentiment. As the other gentleman has already said though, they had the coin in hand.... their slab, their money, their guarantee. Congrats, OP.
